The Karlshof Story - 40 years of dedication to the breedBy Dan Kiedrowski Published in Schnauzer Shorts Nov/Dec 2005 Karl Barth's interest in Miniature Schnauzers began in his boyhood days in Germany, as his father had a friend who was a successful breeder. When finally settled in Knoxville, Tenessee in 1965, he purchased a proven bitch of Benrook-Jonaire breeding with eight points. Several breedings with mixed success occurred during the next decade, always breeding to dogs of quality, but not choosing to exhibit. In 1975 Karl bought Ch. Zomerhof's Promenade, who now has offspring in the tenth generation at Karlshof. Exhibiting still was limited, as his career as Professor of Animal Nutrition at the University of Tennessee was very demanding. The breeding program at Karlshof, a small hobby kennel, got a big boost with the purchase of Ch. Shorlaine Sheik Of Carolane, from Dr. & Mrs. Carl Beiles (Carolane) in 1979. Sired by their famed Ch. Penlan Peter Gunn (73), Sheik was intensely linebred within the Ruffian Branch, being out of Lori Bush's (Shorlaine) Ch. Carolane's Heritage, the ninth Champion for Carolane's Heaven Sent (9), sired by Ch. Carolane's Royal Rogue, whose dam is a double-up on Ch. Helarry's Harmony (22). Sheik gave Karl his first top producing sire, (Ch. Karlshof Kublai Khan (5), out of the fourth generation of Karlshof breeding, Karlshof High Rising Star. The bitch that really got things rolling was the Sheik daughter, Ch. Karlshof Kopakobana. She served notice of things to come when her title quest, handled by Lanny Hirstein (Penlan), included a five-point Best of Breed from the classes at the 1986 Mount Vernon Specialty over 36 entries, including seven Champions. This was the beginning of a long-lasting and extremely successful relationship with the Hirsteins, only terminated with their retirement from handling, and would result in over two dozen Karlshof Champions finished by them. Kopakobana's first Champion, and Karl's first top producing bitch was Ch. Karlshof Kornukopia (5), sired by Ch. Penlan Promissory (27). Her record in the classes, again with the Hirsteins at the helm, was like a dream come true. In the fall of 1988, her Championship quest lasted just six weeks, during which she was Winners or better at three Specialties, and included back-to-back five-pointers, a Best of Breed and three BOS wins over Specials. Kopakobana also gave Karl his next top producing bitch, Karlshof Karissima (4), by the B/S Ch. Repitition's Mirror Man, CD (8). Their offspring would be intermingled with great success. Karissima also produced several Canadian Champions, including Can. Ch. Karlshof Krystal Of Evalill, foundation bitch for the Evalill Kennels of Eva Monsen and Chris McKay in Ontario, Canada, who now have Champion descendents into the fifth generation. Kornukopia was first bred to Ch. Penlan Persnickety (11), giving Karl his first successful Specials dog, and top producer, Ch. Karlshof Kristopher Kolumbus (9). His show career began with puppy class successes, including Best in Sweepstakes at both the 1991 Cleveland and Des Moines Specialties, under John Constantine (Adamis) and Marcia Feld (Feldmar) respectively. He also scored Best of Winners at the latter under Jinx Gunville (Merry Makers), and finished at under ten months of age with four Breed wins and a Group placement, handled by the Hirsteins. Kornukopia, bred in-house to Kublai Khan, gave Karl yet another top winner and top producer, Ch Karlshof Handful of Whim-Cim (5), shared with David Hallock (Whim-Cin) and named in honor of his mentor, Gene Simmonds (Handful). He served notice by winning Best in Sweepstakes at the 1992 Chicago Specialty, and would rank number one male - Knight System in 1993, and with limited showing, rank number four in 1994. Retired at 2 1/2 years of age, his record consisted of 60 Breed wins, including two Specialty Bests, and 30 Group placement, handled, of course, by Lanny Hirstein. The Kornukopia - Kublai Khan breeding also produced Am. Can. Ch. Karlshof Kudos, foundation sire for the Evalill breeding program, where he was Canada's top sire in 1998 with nine Champions, and is among Canada's all-time top sires with 27 Champions. Kudos has also contributed to the breeding efforts of Lynda Berar at Naibara, and Gail Wilford at Scandals.
Kornukopia's fifth Champion came from her third litter, sired by Ch. Rhondonhaus Copy Right. After a successful career here, Ch. Karlshof King Of The Road was sent to Graciela Miguel in Buenos Aires, Argentina where he earned several additional titles as well as winning Best in Show at the 1994 SICALAM, South America's most prestigious show, rotating annually to different countries, not unlike the World Show. Other Karlshof exports would follow. The Karlshof/Whim-Cin partnership would then field the Handful son, Ch. Karlshof Kuno Von Whim-Cin (10). Karl provides an interesting "aside", concerning Kuno . . . It is interesting how he came into this world and how he was named. After a successful 1994 Florida Panhandle circuit, his sire was to be shown in Chattanooga and Nashville, before going up north. I thought I had better take advantage of him being so close, and breed a bitch to him. My friend Carol Brogden (Rhondonhaus) had a Kristopher daughter and litter sister to my Rhondonhaus Karlshof Kamille (3) in season. So I leased her and bred her to Handful. In Chattanooga I was thrilled to witness King Of The Road winning a major and Handful winning the Terrier Group. At Nashville, Handful won another Group, and King Of The Road, another major, which finished him, and he was ready to be shipped to Graciela, who was waiting for him in Miami, to take him to his new home in Argentina. I took Rudmhilda home, and in due time she presented me with a litter of six male puppies. David Hallock was interested in these puppies, so we met halfway at the home of Frances Hutchinson (Franzel) in Nashville, and with the help of Claudia Seaberg (Seacrest), we evaluated the litter. Some of us liked one pup and some liked another, so Dave took two pups back to Kentucky. At 12 weeks of age, he took them to the Hirsteins where Lanny looked at Kuno and said " that's my Chicago puppy." Dave named Kuno in honor of the breed's American patriarch, Ch. Cuno Von Burgstadt (14), who had been imported from Germany 70 years ago, and is removed 20 tail-male generations from Kuno. Kuno served notice at the 1995 Chicago AMSC Specialty, where he was Winners Dog from the 9-12 puppy class, and finished as Best of Winners at the Michigan Specialty. His Specials career, with the Hirsteins, was launched on the 1996 Florida circuit, winning five of the seven times shown. His Best of Breed at the AMSC Montgomery County over a record entry of 162, had to be one of Karl's and Dave's proudest moments. To date, Kuno is the sire of ten Champions. Kristopher and Karissima would give Karlshof its next star, both in the ring and as a producer, and he would carry three crosses to Sheik. Karl had the pleasure of starting Ch. Karlshof Kaptain Kidd (12) out as an eight-months puppy, showing him to his first major. Turned over to the Hirsteins, he came away from the Louisville cluster as a Champion, with three more majors in three days, including a five-pointer. He would rank as the Top Schnauzer - All Systems 1997, his 39 Breed wins included the Chicago and AMSC Great Western Specialties, as well as the "Triple Crown" on the Montgomery County weekend, two of the three wins under breeder-judges. At one point, Kaptain enjoyed a winning streak of 13 shows undefeated in the breed, and his record in Group competition was of equal merit, with six Firsts and 15 additional placements that year. The Kristopher daughter, Rhondonhaus Karlshof Kamille (3) would not only gain top producing status, but would give Karl yet another top show dog. Ch. Karlshof Kosmik Kaper, co-owned with Bennie and Brenda Wilson. He showed his superior breeding by sweeping the 1997 Chicago Specialty weekend, going Best of Winners all three days, as well as Best in Sweepstakes at both the Chicago and AMSC Specialties. He went on to win Groups and Specialties, but his crowning achievement was when Lanny handled him to Best in Show at the Central Iowa Kennel Club in September 1998. When Kamille was bred to Khan, she produced Ch. Karlshof Khan's Kamilla (3), who was destined to become the first Karlshof top producing bitch of the New Millennium. Bred several times to Kaptain, she has Champion offspring in Canada, Sweden and Taiwan, as well as her three American Champion get. The Kamilla - Kaptain son, Ch. Karlshof Kommander In Chief, was chosen to be the next torch bearer at Karlshof. Shown by the Hirsteins, he finished as a yearling, earning several Breed wins along the way. On his first Specials coat, he won seven Bests of Breed, including the Cleveland Specialty, and five Group placements, including a First, all in just 21 days of showing. In March and early April of 2000, he was shown 17 times and won 14 Breed wins, including the St. Louis Specialty, while still under two years of age. Based on his youthful performance, he showed great promise that he might equal or even surpass the achievements of his sire. But this was not to be. His Specials career was cut short by a heart attack experienced by Karl, who was forced to decrease his kennel population. Since Kaptain and Kristopher were still young and healthy, Karl decided to sell Kommander to Andy Hsieh in Taiwan, where he continued his show career. The first time shown in his new home he won Best in Show, and now has a Best-in-Show winning son and grandson there. The breeding program at Karlshof continues. Kaptain, his pride and joy, is still siring quality puppies, and Karl gets much satisfaction out of their show successes. He reminds us that . . . Whatever successes in breeding and in the ring we have enjoyed is due in no small measure to the satisfying and fruitful associations and/or partnerships with other breeder-exhibitors. Foremost among them are Lanny and Penny Hirstein. My gratitude for their professionalism in handling, and the impact that their stud dogs have had is enormous. Now, Kurt Garmaker is doing an excellent job handling my dogs, and I am hoping for a long and successful relationship with him also. A Complete Line Of AKC Champion Descendency based onCH.
